Kind soul, great spirit indeed!

From Wiki;

"As the festival's first performer, he held the crowd for nearly three hours (in part because he was told to perform a lengthy set because many artists were delayed in reaching the festival location), and he was called back for several encores. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual "Motherless Child" that became "Freedom". The subsequent Woodstock movie release helped Havens reach a worldwide audience."

This is all true ,but when he did "make it" commercially he sang background on an AMTRACK commercial. When asked about it I think he was so embarrased that he denied it saying that someone else impersonated his voice being one of the first counter culture guys. I thought this was really funny because clearly he has a voice like no other and was embarassed that he was making cash from the the man.I said all power to ya Richie make it any way you can.
